Hear it from Slalom: Why they chose RiverMeadow over MGN

AWS Partner Cast — Slalom discusses their decision to use RiverMeadow instead of native AWS Application Migration Service (MGN) for their customer engagement.

Positioning

Why RiverMeadow instead of native tooling alone

AWS native tools like Application Migration Service (MGN) are strong for many rehost scenarios. RiverMeadow is one of AWS's vetted ISV alternatives, purpose-built to cover gaps and add capability — especially for regulated, complex, or region-constrained environments.

Use this framing with customers who are weighing "do we even need a tool" — native services remain a great starting point, but RiverMeadow adds automation depth, security hardening, and multi-cloud flexibility that reduces post-migration cleanup work.

AWS ISV Tooling Program

How the funding program actually works

The AWS ISV Tooling Program is a strategic AWS funding initiative that provides validated third-party software licenses — like RiverMeadow — to eligible customers at no cost, through eligible Services Partners or directly. Participation and continued availability is at AWS's sole discretion.

It's stackable, and it's not "either/or"

The AWS-Funded ISV Tooling offer is designed to layer on top of other AWS partner funding — it is not a replacement for MAP, MMP, or VMP funding your customer may already qualify for.

MAP 2025 (Migration Acceleration Program) MMP (Microsoft Modernization Program) VMP (VMware Modernization Program) One OLA (Optimization & Licensing Assessment)

RiverMeadow's software license cost is funded by AWS directly to RiverMeadow — it does not draw down or reduce the partner cash your consulting/services partner is entitled to under MAP, MMP, or VMP.

Funding coverage by project phase

Funding can be requested at each stage of the customer's journey, based on qualification.

Up to 4 mo.
Assessment / Proof of Concept license funding
Up to 12 mo.

3 + 12 mo.
Modernization assessment, then modernization project
Up to 12 mo.
Managed Service software funding
Up to $2M
Total software license funding per customer (across ISV tools, subject to AWS approval)
Up to $200K
Assessment-phase funding cap, per customer

License term runs for the duration of the project, capped at 12 months from approval. AWS reserves the right to modify or terminate the program or funding levels at any time.

Does the opportunity qualify?

Quick gut-check before you bring RiverMeadow in — if these are true, it's worth submitting.

✓1-tier model — you (the requestor) have the direct customer touchpoint. Not applicable to Distribution Partners.
Getting Approved

How to prep and register the opportunity

Once RiverMeadow accepts your referral, here's exactly what needs to happen — share the opportunity in ACE, then work through the readiness checklist below before RiverMeadow submits the Fund Request.

Sharing the opportunity in ACE (AEC)

This is the step most sellers ask about. To bring RiverMeadow onto a deal, share the opportunity with RiverMeadow inside ACE (AWS Partner Central's opportunity engine) and tag it so it routes correctly for ISV funding.

Open the opportunity in ACE
Click "Share with partner"
Add #AWSfundedisv in notes
RiverMeadow accepts (SLA: 48 hrs)

Once accepted, RiverMeadow qualifies the opportunity, submits the APFP Fund Request tagged to that ACE Opportunity ID, and keeps you posted through approval. After approval, RiverMeadow allocates the license, delivers the engagement, and invoices AWS directly — your customer never sees a bill for the software.

Note: opportunity stage and MRR must stay in sync between ACE and AWS Salesforce, or the fund request will be delayed. Avoid creating duplicate opportunities for the same customer engagement — use Partner Connections / opportunity sharing instead.

Quick Answers

FAQ for AWS sellers

Is this really $0 cost to my customer?+

Yes, when the opportunity is qualified and approved, AWS funds the RiverMeadow software license directly — the customer's software order shows a $0 net cost for the funded amount. This is subject to AWS's ongoing approval and program availability; AWS makes no guarantee of continued funding.

Can this stack with MAP, MMP, or VMP funding?+

Yes. The ISV Tooling offer is stackable with MAP, MMP, and VMP engagements. Your partner's cash funding under those programs is unaffected — RiverMeadow's software cost is covered by AWS directly to RiverMeadow.

Do I need a separate request for Assess vs. Migrate?+

Yes. Assess and Migrate/Modernize phases each require their own Fund Request, tied to the same ACE opportunity. RiverMeadow handles this submission once the opportunity is shared and accepted.

How long is the funded license valid?+

For the duration of the assessment, migration, or modernization project — capped at 12 months from the date of approval.

Does the license have to go through AWS Marketplace?+

No, though a Marketplace Private Offer is the preferred, most streamlined path. RiverMeadow can also deliver via a signed tri-party license agreement or documented customer intent to deploy.

What if the customer isn't a fit today?+

ARR under $125K or an early sales stage doesn't rule it out forever — keep RiverMeadow in mind as the opportunity matures. One exception: in regions where AWS MGN isn't available, RiverMeadow may qualify regardless of ARR or workload type.
